Candida Hofer: Dublin
Edited by Rachael Thomas, et al.
Irish Museum of Modern Art
Distributed By Trans-Atlantic Publications
80 pages. Illustrated. 8 5/8 x 11"
German photographer Candida Höfer creates meticulously composed images of public and institutional spaces marked with the richness of human activity, empty rooms but with evidence of human presence. Höfer's unpeopled interiors describe a selection of formal, public and cultural spaces, including palaces, libraries and museums, which she imbues with a palpable humanity.
These large-scale colour photographs act as a tribute to spaces defined by the everyday activities of the people who occupy them. For this publication, Candida Hoffer presents a body of work she made while on a working visit to Dublin in 2004. These immaculately contained and exquisitely composed photographs include images taken at the National Library of Ireland, the Central Catholic Library, Marsh's Library, the Merrion Hotel, the Long Room in the Old Library of Trinity College and the Great Hall and Chapel at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.
