Sarah Lucas was born in 1962 in London, where she resides. The beginnings of her career are closely bound up with the phenomenon of Young British Art, fostered by Charles Saatchi in the 1990s. She is a member of the generation of Damien Hirst, Gary Hume and Tracey Emin--all artists she has worked with.

Her works are characterized by a metaphorical, crude and intentionally stereotyped vision of sex and embodied in a variety of contemporary techniques, ranging from photography to drawing, installations, videos, and sculptures. She is regarded as one of the leading women artists on the international art scene.
