Tatsuo Miyajima began his artistic career sculpting and performing but by the end of the eighties he was producing installations using LED’s (Light-Emitting Diodes). Using darkrooms, he explored time passing. Miyajima began studying Buddhist philosophy when he was 23, and refers to Buddhism as a ‘religion about time’.

The LED units, which recur in his work, count in groups of ten for spiritual as well as mathematical reasons. The number ten represents the human being, a life force in Buddhist philosophy; and rather than using zero, which denotes an end, the units count from one to nine, then go dark, creating various momentary breaks in form.
